Isolated. A story of survival

Geographical islands have represented evolutive laboratories for species and a challenge for animals and plants that have had to adapt to the local conditions of these territories. Thus, these isolated places have compelled living beings to find ecological solutions that are different from those normally used on the five continents.

Likewise, in the interior of the continents, there are specific places with exclusive environmental conditions that are different from the areas that surround them. These inland ecological islands, many of which have been created by man in his devastating attempt to expand, have similar rules to those of geographical islands.

Isolated is the story about the different species that inhabit these islands the geographical islands and the continental islands and how they have to confront the local rules of survival, which, surprisingly, have a lot in common. A marine iguana on the Galapagos Islands, a group of lemurs in Madagascar, a tiger in Sariska National Park in India, a deer in the south of Jersey Island (U.K), two grizzly bears on Kodiak Island (Alaska), an orangutan in Borneo, and a crocodile in Papua New Guinea are some of the protagonists of this story about adapting to local paradises. Through them, we will learn about the problem of living in isolation, the challenges of surviving in the limited space of an island, the competition to find a niche to exploit, and the alliances established among the different animals so that they can reach their most important goal: the survival of the species.

EP. I: Separated from the World

Here we will present the concept of isolation and will discuss its different origins. This first episode will be an introduction to the rest of the series. It will give a general vision of the subjects that will later be developed in detail in the following episodes. Here we will discuss adaptation, geological cataclysms, massive extinctions, and ecological frailties.

This episode will also introduce the protagonists of the series.

EP. II: Islands of fire and corals
This episode is dedicated to colonization and life on volcanic islands, and life that has developed because of reef barriers. A marine iguana and a giant turtle of the Galapagos Islands, a Komodo dragon, clown fish, a young orangutan, and a family of Papues will be the main protagonists. Through them, we will discover the extraordinary population of living beings who have adapted to living on these islands, which are the result of a devastating volcanic eruption or are due to the construction of thousands of microscopic beings.
EP. III: Cold Islands
On the opposite extremes of the globe, dotting the northern and southern hemispheres, a great many islands are home to the protagonists of this episode. Adapted like no others to the rigors of the climate, a king penguin, an albatross, a grizzly bear, a group of walruses, a baby elephant seal, and a giant petrel will be our guides and they will teach us how they are able to survive, in isolation, in a freezing cold land swept by the icy winds of the two polar icecaps.
EP. IV: Continental Islands
Isolation because of continental drift… Some portions of the Earth that are the size of small continents are breaking away from the continental masses and creating different worlds of amazing proportions. The inhabitants of these colossal islands, many of them relics of past geographical eras, will the be protagonists of this episode. An echidna, a family of brown lemurs, a pair of fossas, a Tasmanian devil, an elderly Aborigine, a giant chameleon, and a fun family of kangaroos will be some of the leading actors in this episode.
EP. V: Inland Islands
On certain occasions, unique geographical factors, catastrophes, or mainly the hand of man have created inland islands in the interior of the continents: places isolated from the rest due to a loss of continuity in a specific ecosystem. These internal islands, places of forced confinement for species, will be the focus of this fifth episode. An Indian tiger, a family of Bushmen, a colony of Costa Rican ants, a Venezuelan jaguar, a Kopje from the heart of Kenya, a pack of wolves in Yellowstone, and the last population of Asian lions in the world will be the protagonists this episode.
EP. VI: The End of Isolation
As in all societies on Earth, globalization is also reaching the islands. New species are gaining access to these ecologically fragile paradises. Man advances. He is unstoppable and he is moving pieces of nature that need thousands of years to adapt. This is the end of isolation for places with an independent evolutionary path. And the ecological results are devastating. Feral pigs, wild dogs, indigenous populations, the deer in South Georgia, dingos and aborigines, and especially, civilized man, will be the protagonists of this final episode.
